Workshop #2: The Anatomy of Music ~ Ana fi Intizarak

By Henna & David Reihs

Sunday, October 9, 2016

Time: 2:00-5:00 PM

WORKSHOP DETAILS:

WS#1: Body Talk, Belly Dance Combinations by Henna
2 hours

How do we move beyond shapes and shimmies to create truly meaningful dances? In this workshop, you’ll learn 3 belly dance combinations set to instrumental pieces of Egyptian music. Beyond just drilling movement, these combos were built with space for each dancer to listen and feel the music and allow their inner voice to shine through. These dynamic combos are not only exciting to watch, but feel great to dance!

WS#2: The Anatomy of Music ~ Ana fi Intizarak
3 hours
The classic Egyptian song, “Ana fi intizarak” translates to “I am waiting for you” and was sung by the legendary Oum Kalthoum. This song is loved by audiences around the world and, over the years, has become a belly dance standard. In this unique workshop, David Reihs and I will guide you through this song by listening closely to the music, studying its history in the context of Egyptian music and dance, and through the lyrics as well.

David Reihs of Ritim Egzotik will play the percussion and the melody of the song live in this workshop. You’ll hear and dance to the rhythms of the drum to understand how feeling and meaning are conveyed through the song’s structure. David will play the melody and explain the maqamat (Middle Eastern musical scales) for an opportunity to explore the moods of different scales, and for those used in this song.

Henna will bring a dancer’s perspective, guiding you through exercises to help you follow and feel the dynamics of the music. She’ll show you exactly how I approach deciding on music to dance to, how she makes artistic decisions based on all aspects of the music, and how to negotiate dancing to music that is not in one’s native language. The dance portion incorporates exploratory exercises in listening as well as dance combinations and a short choreography to sections of the music.

We’ll be listening, talking, dancing, and watching videos to gain new and deeper perspective on this epic and much loved piece of music.
